What a good dashboard should actually tell you

Most dashboards show a lot and say very little. The best ones answer a small number of questions leaders ask every week.

A dashboard isn't valuable because it has many charts. It's valuable when someone looks at it and knows what to do next.

Start with decisions, not data

Before designing anything, list the decisions the dashboard should support. “Where are we losing customers?” and “Which branch needs attention this week?” lead to very different — and far more useful — designs than “show all the data”.

  • Lead with 3–5 metrics that matter, each with a clear target.
  • Show trends, not just today's number.
  • Make it obvious when something needs attention.
  • Let people drill down to the detail behind a number.
  • Make sure everyone trusts where the data comes from.

If a chart never changes a decision, it doesn't belong on the dashboard.
